- Per-condition lifetime deductible, any amount from $0 to $1,000. Paid once per condition for the pet's life.

- Unlimited — no annual or lifetime payout cap.
- Exam fees
- Vet exam fees are not reimbursed — they're your responsibility on every claim, including specialist and ER visits.
- Dental
- Covers extraction and repair of teeth damaged in an accident, and extractions for dental disease if recommended dental care was followed. Routine cleanings are not covered.
- Alternative therapy
- Acupuncture, physical therapy, hydrotherapy and similar are covered only with the optional Recovery and Complementary Care rider.
- Wellness
- No routine/wellness coverage is offered.
- Waiting periods
- Accidents 5 days, illness 30 days. Trupanion's site lists 5 days for injuries and 30 for illness. Some states' newer policy forms (e.g. Maine) have no waiting periods but start coverage 12 days after enrollment.
- Cured pre-existing conditions
- Pre-existing conditions are excluded even after they're cured.
