How recommendations are made
Plan data last reviewed 2026-10-16.
1. Hard filters
First, any plan that simply cannot cover your pet is removed: wrong species, your pet is over the insurer's maximum enrollment age, the plan isn't sold in your state, or it doesn't offer the coverage type you asked for (accident-only, accident & illness, or accident & illness with wellness).
2. Weighted scoring
The remaining plans are scored against your preferences. Each factor is weighted by how much it typically affects owners:
- Monthly cost & annual payout limit β highest weight
- Reimbursement %, direct vet billing, exam fees, dental, deductible style, cover for cured pre-existing conditions β medium weight
- Alternative therapy & multi-pet discount β lighter weight
A plan that fully meets a preference earns full points; a partial fit earns half; a clear miss earns none. The score is the percentage of available points earned β only factors you expressed a preference on are counted. Coverage sold only as a paid add-on (for example exam fees on some plans) earns half points.
3. The result
You get the single highest-scoring plan as the recommendation, plus up to three alternatives β one from each of the next-best providers, for genuine variety. Every card spells out what didn't match so the final call is yours.
On accuracy & pricing
Coverage details were fact-checked field-by-field against each provider's own policy-wording PDFs and official sites on 2026-10-16. Most fields were confirmed against those primary documents; the few that still rely on secondary sources (for example, a plan with no separately published policy document) carry an explicit caveat on the plan card rather than a guess. Pet insurance premiums depend on species, breed, exact age and ZIP code, and US insurers don't publish fixed price tables β so this tool never shows a made-up price. Where a verified example exists it is labelled with its source; otherwise plans are grouped only as budget, mid-range or premium. Always get a live quote.

This is an independent informational tool, not financial or veterinary advice, and is not affiliated with any insurer. ManyPets is not included: it stopped selling in the US at the end of 2025 and moved its customers to Odie. PHI Direct is not included: it sells only in Canada. Bivvy and Wagmo are not included because their underwriter and current plan terms couldn't be confirmed from their own documents. Brands that resell another insurer's plan (for example CarePlus by Chewy) are listed on that plan rather than as separate providers. Brokers and comparison sites (such as Pawlicy Advisor or PawQuote), discount plans and emergency-fund services are not insurers and are not included. Verify all details with the insurer before purchasing.
